8 Ways to Beat “The Blue Monday

January 20, 2025

Every third week of January, “Blue Monday” makes its way into headlines as the so-called “most depressing day of the year.” While it’s not backed by science, it does serve as a reminder of how tough the winter months can be. Short days, cold weather, post-holiday blues, and money worries can all take a toll on your team’s mood and motivation to go to work.

But this is normal. In this blog, let us focus on plenty ofsimple ways to help your employees feel supported during this time of year. Here are some  practical ideas you can put into action today.

1. Keep the Conversation Flowing

The best way to support mental health at work? Start talking. Let your team know it’s okay to share how they’re feeling. This could be through regular check-ins, team meetings, or even just a quick chat over coffee.

For remote workers, make an extra effort to stay connected. A friendly video call or a virtual coffee break can help tackle feelings of isolation.

2. Focus on Staying Healthy

Winter isn’t just coldit’s also flu season (especially with the current news about Human metapneumovirus or hMPV). Be proactive about keeping your team healthy.

Offer flu jabs if you can. Keep the kitchen stocked with healthy snacks and encourage quick movement breaks, like stretching or a brisk walk. These small steps can make a big difference in keeping everyone feeling their best.

3. Share Tips and Ideas

Wellness is more than just snacks and exercise. Help your team understand why these things matter. You could organise a quick session on healthy eating, managing stress, or staying active.

When people know how these habits benefit them, they’re more likely to stick with them, especially if they know their colleagues are making the effort too.

4. Make Well-Being Everyone’s Job

Supporting your team isn’t just the HR department’s responsibility, it’s something everyone can contribute to. Whether it’s budgeting for wellness programs, sharing resources, or just being a supportive colleague, it all adds up.

5. Be Flexible

Winter comes with its fair share of challenges, sickness, bad weather, and public transport delays, to name a few. Offer flexible hours or remote working options where you can. It shows your team you care about their well-being and helps reduce stress.

6. Get Outside When You Can

The lack of sunlight in winter can really drag people down. Encourage your employees to get outside during the day, even if it’s just for a quick walk. For indoor workers, make sure the workspace is bright and cheerful, or even consider getting some light therapy lamps to boost their mood.

7. Celebrate the Small Wins

Winter can feel like a slog, so find little ways to celebrate your team. Bring in lunch, host a casual after-work get-together, or organise a fun online social. Showing appreciation doesn’t have to be fancy, it just has to be genuine.

8. Don’t Forget About Yourself

As a leader, it’s easy to focus on everyone else and forget about your own well-being. But if you’re running on empty, you can’t support your team effectively. Make time for yourself, whether that’s connecting with a mentor, chatting with a trusted peer, or even just taking a proper break.
